Former Man City player Sergio Aguero has come out strongly in defense of Arsenal’s style of play following their impressive 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League last-16.
The Gunners delivered a dominant performance at the Emirates, with Eberechi Eze opening the scoring in the first half before Declan Rice sealed the win with a stunning strike after the break. The result secured Arsenal’s place in the quarter-finals for the third consecutive season, with Sporting CP waiting next.
However, despite their success, Arsenal have faced criticism in recent months, with some labeling their style as “boring” due to their effectiveness from set pieces and structured approach under Mikel Arteta.
Aguero dismissed those claims, defending the North London side:
“What does ‘boring football’ even mean? I don’t think it’s boring for their fans when their team is at the top of the table.
Saying they’re boring because they often score from set pieces minimises their style of play.
Maybe it’s not fun for fans of other teams, and I can understand that. But I don’t think that should determine who neutral fans want to win the title.”
Arsenal’s performance against Leverkusen highlighted their balance between structure and attacking quality. With players like Leandro Trossard and Bukayo Saka creating constant danger, and Rice controlling the midfield, the Gunners showed why they are considered serious contenders both domestically and in Europe.
Under Arteta, Arsenal have combined tactical discipline with efficiency—something Aguero clearly values over aesthetic criticism.
With momentum building and a quarter-final clash on the horizon, Arsenal are not just winning—they’re proving that “effective football” is what truly matters at the highest level.
