Arsenal dealt major blow as key midfielder ruled out for four months

The Premier League title race is as much about mental strength as it is about quality on the pitch. Over the course of a long season, injuries are inevitable — and how a team responds often defines whether they lift the trophy or fall short.

Arsenal are now facing one of those defining moments. Manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that midfielder Mikel Merino will be sidelined for around four months with a stress fracture in his right foot, an injury that is expected to keep him out for the remainder of the season.

Arteta did not hide his disappointment, describing the setback as a “big blow” for the squad. He highlighted Merino’s unique qualities and influence within the team, while stressing the importance of keeping the player involved during his recovery so he can continue supporting teammates off the pitch.

Merino, who joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2025, has quickly become an important figure in the midfield. This season, he has contributed six goals and three assists in 33 appearances across all competitions, playing a key role in both domestic and European matches.

Despite his importance, Arsenal chose not to strengthen in midfield during the January transfer window, placing trust in the depth and versatility already available in the squad. That decision will now be tested as the Gunners enter a demanding run of fixtures.

The timing of the injury is far from ideal. Arsenal currently sit nine points clear at the top of the Premier League after 25 matches, and Merino has been instrumental in their push for silverware, including their unbeaten run in European competition.

Arteta, however, remains confident in the group’s ability to adapt. He has praised emerging partnerships in midfield and believes the squad has the character to handle setbacks as the schedule intensifies.

Supporters have voiced concern about how Merino’s absence could affect Arsenal’s title ambitions, but there is also optimism that the team’s depth and strong form can carry them through. Attention now turns to his rehabilitation process, with the club focused on ensuring a full and careful recovery.

As Arsenal chase their first league title in more than two decades, this injury presents a serious challenge. How they cope without one of their most reliable midfielders could play a decisive role in the outcome of the season.
